Indicator (1999)

Purchased by the City of Green Bay, Wisconsin for the city's permanent art collection.

A sculpture pavilion with a wind-directional kinetic element at the top.

The base consists of four columns made of timbers salvaged from a recently torn-down building in Chicago. Each column is topped with a galvanized steel bucket that in the summer holds potting soil and wild flowers. On the top of the columns sits a dome with a tower, all made of rebar also salvaged from a wrecking site in Chicago. Standing in the middle of the four columns and looking up, one can see the intriguing pattern of the tower.

The tower is topped with a weather vane made of stainless steel and aluminum. The weather vane not only follows the wind direction but also responds to wind currents and gusts by "swimming" up and down into the wind - a movement that reminds some viewers of fish swimming in the ocean.

Media: salvaged steel, aluminum, salvaged wood, galvanized steel.

Dimensions: 24' H x 15' W x 15' D

Photographed at Navy Pier in Chicago during the Pier Walk sculpture show.
